Social Media Campaign Fatigue

In the new era, social media marketing is quickly replacing older, less effective methods of the past. However, these new methods have spawned a unique problem; campaign fatigue. This occurs after the initial launch when the campaign is in full swing. Over time, the daily tweets, blog posts and status updates can grow tiresome. This, coupled with the distraction of other projects, can lead to a dangerous drop off in interest.
Keeping the fire burning month after month takes diligence, but it is possible. It’s all about setting a game plan and sticking to it. Here are my top three tactics for maintaining a healthy (and responsive) social media campaign.
Checklists
One of the best things you can do with the outset of a new social media marketing campaign is to establish a number of daily and weekly checklists. These checklists contain specific tasks to be completed on a pre-set basis. Checklists help lessen the burden of remembering tedious tasks and make the process much less cumbersome. They also serve as a psychological aid as checking items off the list clearly shows task progress and thus reducing frustration.
Scheduling Your Status Updates
This entails setting specific times of the day, or week, to post new status updates, tweets and/or other social media campaign tasks. A good way to do this is to use a calendar app (MS Outlook, iCal, etc) that alerts you when it’s time to make an update. Of course, the most crucial detail of this method is to not ignore these alerts. This is an easy trap to fall into. Your best way to follow through is to not close the reminder until the task has been completed.
Keep it a Priority
This is a big one. As other projects begin to mount, it’s easy to reduce the importance of your social media tasks. A good way to overcome this is to set these tasks to a higher priority level. This will help keep social media tasks ahead of other tasks as new projects continue to roll in. There must be buy-in from all levels in order for this to work. Prioritizing projects may not be within your power, so making sure the executive team understands the importance of social media is crucial. After all, as important as billable projects may be, keeping a steady flow of business through continuous self-promotion is essential.
